IS IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID TOOTH EXTRACTION?
Currently, there is no reliable technology that can restore bone. And if the bone is resorbed due to periodontitis, then there is a risk of tooth loss. However, thanks to the root surface smoothing technique, it is possible to preserve the level of bone tissue that is present at the start of gum treatment. The bone does not resorb further and, thus, we save teeth from extraction.
SRP periodontal treatment is performed under local anesthesia to numb the area where the procedure is performed. However, patients may experience some sensitivity or discomfort in the gums for a few days after the appointment. In such cases, we recommend special oral care products to reduce discomfort.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SRP PROCEDURE?
The SRP procedure is aimed at stopping and controlling the disease. Cleaning the root surfaces and removing dental plaque helps eliminate inflammation and reduce the depth of periodontal pockets. This in turn helps restore the ligament between the teeth and gums, prevents further destruction of periodontal tissues and reduces the risk of tooth loss.
It is important to follow your dentist’s instructions for oral care after your SRP. There will be some gum sensitivity and discomfort in the area of the procedure for the first few days. It is recommended to avoid hard food and hot or spicy drinks for the first few days. It is also important to continue maintain good hygiene on your own, including regular brushing and flossing, to prevent reinfection and maintain healthy gums.
If you have gum disease, you will not be able to keep your smile for long.
Unlike caries, which is rarely multiple and destructive, if you do not treat periodontitis, you can lose several, if not all, teeth at the same time. If the doctor does not intervene, this will happen quickly, in 2-3 years. With adequate gum treatment tactics, your smile is restored and preserved for decades.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TREAT YOUR GUMS WITH THE ROOT SURFACE SMOOTHING METHOD?
Then you will have to start all over again.
Bacteria that cause periodontitis multiply within two, maximum three months.
If you miss this period, the effect of the gum treatment by smoothing the root surface is completely lost. And the treatment has to be started over, saving teeth from extraction becomes longer and more expensive.
It is performed once.
It can be divided into two sessions when it takes a long time to treat each quadrant (1⁄4 of the oral cavity).
Further treatment of the disease is regular MAINTENANCE PERIODONTAL THERAPY, which stops the development of periodontitis.
The first session is scheduled 2 months after the main periodontal treatment of the gums with the SRP method.
The procedure is performed according to an individual schedule depending on the severity of the disease.
The dynamics of gum treatment is monitored in the periodontal chart.
The time for the SRP procedure depends on the extent of gum damage and the treatment area. It usually takes one appointment lasting about two hours. More complex cases may require additional time or another visit.
No rinses or ointments can replace a visit to a periodontist. You can and should follow home hygiene recommendations and visit your doctor on time.
- Elimination of gum inflammation and reduction of periodontal pocket depth (area between gum and root surface)
- Prevention of further periodontal tissue destruction and maintenance of gum health
- Improvement of smile aesthetics
- Reduction of risk of bone loss and tooth loss.
Daily oral care after SRP is important to maintain the results of gum treatment. Regular brushing, flossing and regular professional hygiene with a doctor reduce the risk of recurrent inflammation and stop periodontitis.
Yes, you can, however it is recommended that you avoid hard and coarse foods for a few days to prevent possible injury to your gums.
